Pick Up Point

At guest hotel

Day 1 of Tour

  • Pick up from JRO for overnight stay at Maasai Boma Lodge
  • This logde is named after the Maasai tribe who were Pastoralists living around and grazing their cattles a long time ago. They also had their traditional houses (Boma) down here. Due to land alianation and global warming, they had to move away to the other side of the country. Some of the grazing areas they moved to are the villages that serve as boundaries to most National Parks in this country.
  • People in Boma villages decided to build the Maasai Boma Lodge as a memory for the love and togetherness that the Maasai left with them. You will get an opportunity to hear some of these stories from the local people around camp fires. Ofcourse the weather plays a role in this regard.

Good to know

VISA Kilimanjaro airport has changed the process of issuing visas upon arrival. Clients arriving in Kilimanjaro without a visa will now need to complete the following process: Queue to obtain a Government Control Number Queue to pay for this at the bank Queue for Immigration to check paperwork and issue your visa This change in process can take an excess of two hours. Therefore, we strongly recommend that those that still have time before they travel apply for their Tanzania 🇹🇿 visa online at www.immigration.go.tz. The online process generally issues your visa within 2-3 weeks. We have been assured that measures are being put in place to make this quicker, but until that happens, we feel that the above recommendation is best. Also, this information is as of January 2020 and the government keeps making changes to the tourism industry, therefore, it is best to check with the official website of Tanzania for any updates. CLOTHING - keep in mind the length of your stay • One or two pairs of comfortable long pants • Two or three pairs of shorts • Skirt or dress slacks for evenings at some hotels/lodges, most are very casual • Two or three t-shirts or short sleeve shirts • One or two long sleeve shirts (for evening warmth and/or sun protection) • Light weight sweater or pull over • Warm jacket/fleece (cooler months of June to Sept. and if camping in Ngorongoro Highlands) • Windbreaker/rain gear, especially from December to June • Pair of thongs/sandals for around camp • Pair of athletic or comfortable walking shoes • Swimsuit • Hat • CLOTHING FOR WALKING SHOULD BE EARTH COLORS TENDING TOWARDS DARKER RATHER THAN LIGHTER. EQUIPMENT • Camera-batteries can be charged at lodges and while driving using the vehicle inverter • Binoculars-GOOD BINOCULARS ARE A MUST FOR DAY TO DAY ANIMAL AND BIRD WATCHING-EVERYONE NEEDS THEIR OWN. • Sunglasses • 1 or 2 plastic water bottles-we supply drinking water to refill these • Sunscreen • Insect repellent-no need for much or for high DEET content-spray, best for ankles and over clothes at dusk • Wet wipes (optional but handy on long dusty travel days) • Reading material for occasional free hour • We will have field guides along. • Flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries • UK adapter plug-most lodges have a power strip but best to have your own in case • Toiletries MISCELLANEOUS • Credit cards-they are still pretty new here. Major lodges will accept them and most major gifts shops will as well. • Cash for shopping-while most major gifts shops take major credit cards, we suggest some cash for the smaller gift shops along the way. US dollars (2006 or newer only) are accepted or you can exchange money once you arrive. • Tipping - tipping for individuals who are helping along the way is included in your safari price with two exceptions: guide and chef (if you are camping). We believe our taking care of this as part of your safari costs takes the awkwardness out of trying to figure out when and how much to tip. Some of our clients like to personally tip helping staff directly so If you should also choose to tip these individuals along the way, please bring small bills. Tipping the guide, who will be with you 24/7, is a personal matter and a typical behavior for those traveling abroad. It is our highest priority, after safety, to give you an authentic, fun and educational experience in Tanzania. Our guides will take good care of you! Give as you feel comfortable. We give you this guideline as a suggestion for tipping guide and chef at the end of the safari. Guide tipping, we suggest $25-$45 per person/ per night. Chef tipping, we suggest $15-$30 per person/ per night. Many safaris are a combination of lodges and camping so tip the chef at the end of his/her time with you. Your generosity means a great deal to these individuals. • Passport and back up copy stored in a separate location. • We suggest a sturdy duffle bag with zip opening or soft sided luggage for your main bag plus having a smaller day pack in which to keep things you will need during the day. • Emergency contact information and travel insurance information. • Most places can do laundry if you are there two consecutive nights but they don't have dryers so it can take several days to dry if it is raining. • Voltage is 220V (US is 110V). Plugs are the 3-pin kind like in UK/England. • Most lodges can’t handle high wattage (1500W) hair dryers. Either plan to go without or buy a low watt (800-1000W). • No need to change money before coming as it can be changed locally. you can usually pay with dollars or TZ shillings. • Be sure to pack medications for the entire trip and several days extra just in case. • We suggest our clients bring hand sanitizer or wipes. These can be nice on a hot, dusty day to refresh yourself if you wish. Also, if your experience includes visiting large groups of people where lots of hugs and greetings are exchanged and you have a concern about germs, you will be prepared. Some of the behaviors which reflect our values regarding animals are: • Please do not mimic or scream at animals in front of them. It is not seen as being respectful to them. • Please do not feed the animals as this will destroy their behaviors for finding food. • Please do not expect drivers to go off the road. We respect nature for tomorrow. • All weather is important in nature. Sometimes Itineraries may change some due to unexpected rain and a new route is needed to cross rivers, etc. Your safety comes first. These days sometimes create the best stories to tell about your trip! • We do not adhere to a strict schedule but let nature show us the amazing animals and people we are to meet each day. In collaboration with our clients, a “loose” schedule allows us to flow with each day and choose from the possibilities that each day brings. We make room for wonderful surprises that come our way. • We know that some of our clients have a passion to see certain animals. Your Itinerary will include the best places to find them, but please remember it is the universe that brings them to us. As your safari unfolds, meeting a variety of people and tribes will naturally happen as we are in relationship with many individuals and tribes. This is Maggie’s backyard and a lifetime of knowing people and the land. Your guide will inform you each step of the way regarding the diversity of life in Tanzania. You are also able to identify and request specific cultural experiences during the planning stages of your safari. Here are some simple dos and don’ts. Your guide will give more information as each day and its experiences unfold. • We ask that you do not hand out gifts to people while hiking or riding, especially the children. Changing their habits will have a negative impact on their families. An example is children take to begging by the road vs. going to school. Your guide can take you places like schools, villages, etc. and will advise you when it is appropriate to offer a gift. • Be sure to always keep track of your belongings when in public campgrounds, lodges, etc. This is also especially true when you stand up in safari trucks with phones or cameras set on the truck roof while viewing animals. We try to remind people, but you take a big risk of items dropping off the roof. It is not possible to retrieve them especially when viewing dangerous animals like lions or hyenas. • When in the safari truck, please do not sit on top of the roof. • Standing on seats is allowed but we ask you take your shoes off first. • Do not walk away from the group without informing your guide, especially when in the bush. • Mealtime is flexible based on how our clients feel and how the day unfolds with animal viewing. Your guide will check in with you throughout the day. We carry plenty of water to keep you hydrated. • Trash in is trash out. We have garbage bins in our trucks. • Be kind to everyone you meet. Remember, your safari with Maggie’s Tour Company is an adventure! It is true when we say, “we will create a safari and cultural experience beyond your wildest dreams”! Following these simple rules will make it a whole lot of fun for everyone! We invite you to read the testimonials on our website. Our past client say it all
