Best time to visit South Africa

South Africa is a big country just south of the tropic of Capricorn, but it is the topography and surrounding oceans that influence its climate, rather than the latitude. Although the climate varies from region to region, it is generally mild and sunny throughout the year. On the whole, it is a dry country with a mean annual rainfall of 502mm. Snowfall is imited to the highest mountain. Although the weather varies from area to area, the best time to visit South Africa is between May and September, as the weather gets cooler. This is the best time for safaris and experiencing the wildlife. It gets quite rainy from November to February, but do not get discouraged by that, every season has its positives, for instance during the raining season it gets less crowded, also, this is the best time for birdwatching.

South Africa’s Wildlife and National Parks

South Africa’s most renown natural reserve (Krueger National Park) is very different from Eastern Africa’s safari parks. Krueger’s landscape (with low grass and open spaces) allow for a smoother safari ride and animals are easier to spot as there a less bushes where they can hide. You can take a drive through the park in your car or take a private tour with one of the many South African tour operators that you can find on Go Africa.
If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, South Africa is definitely the place to be. From surfing, and snorkeling, to more challenging adventures like shark cage diving, and paragliding off mountains, there are many exciting activities that you can participate in. There are many South Africa Adventure companies that offer such experiences in a safe and controlled environment.

South Africa travel tips
Currency

The monetary unit of South Africa is the Rand, divided into cents and abbreviated as R and C.

Visa

If you are visiting South Africa, you must produce a valid visa before you can enter into the country. A visa will be issued for a visit for tourism or business purposes and is valid for a period of 90 days. Depending on your intended visit, you can apply for a Visitor's Visa or a Transit Visa.

Other Tips

Common sense should prevail and precautions should be taken as in any major city. Use hotel and lodge safety deposit boxes. If walking in towns or cities only carry small amounts of cash, do not wear obvious jewellery and keep a close eye on your handbag or wallet. Never leave valuables, especially money and documents unattended in the hotel room or vehicle.
Rather than walk, we recommend that you take a taxi in cities at night. Ask the hotel or restaurant doorman to arrange your cab.
